JEREMIAH PRESS
Alternative Publishing Process
for Professionals
SELF-PUBLISHING ALTERNATIVE
PLAN FOR PROFESSIONALS.
Higher Profits -- (100% after reaching "break-even" cost)
Lower Production Costs -- (low overhead)
Faster Production and Turn Around Time -- 6 - 8
weeks for bound books; 10 days or less for Print on Demand.
Jeremiah Press' self-publishing plan is the ideal plan for authors who have their own built-in markets in their specific professional field, organization or ministries.thus requiring no marketing
Fund Raising: National or diocesan organizations or secular clubs and associations can offer their books for sale to their members. (For instance, my Implementation Manual for the US Bishops’ Document on Evangelization is now in its 8th printing and has augmented the budget of the National Council for Catholic Evangelization for many years since I donated the profits to the NCCE. To date, they have realized well over $100,000 toward their operating budget.)
Additionally, professionals in any field can market their books through professional organizations, clients, students, and speaking engagements/ seminars/ workshops/ church membership, club membership,etc..
Because Jeremiah Press does not store, market, sell, fulfill orders, or distribute the books, the lowest possible production costs are maintained. And, because Jeremiah Press has only two employees who work out of their homes, overhead costs are practically negligible. For the author who can do his/her own marketing/order fulfillment/shipping, this method offers absolutely the highest possible profits. PRODUCTION AND
TURN-AROUND TIME*
From your computer DVD or CD, Jeremiah Press will input, convert (if necessary), and format your text to the standard “Trade Size” book, which is 5 3/8” x 8”or to a larger size, if requested. The text will be thoroughly edited to improve the style, transitions, or accuracy, etc., where necessary. (All changes . . . other than typographical, spelling, or grammar errors . . . must be approved by the author prior to printing.)
Meanwhile, you submit your cover design. If requested, we can help you design the cover from your ideas. (There is a small extra charge for actually doing the artwork.)With your input, we design the all-important back cover, also, using your photograph (formal or informal) and promotional, descriptive text. (Cover must be approved by the author prior to printing.)
The text and cover are then proofed and corrected again by professional proofreaders and sent to you for proofing. We strongly suggest that the author ask a friend or colleague to proofread the manuscript. It is very easy and common for an author or editor, after working so much with the text, simply to oversee a spelling or grammatical error. The author is required to sign off on the final manuscript after carefully reviewing and approving the final text and the cover design. It is important to note that even professional proofreaders may miss minor errors, so we do not guarantee 100% accuracy.
After you have approved it, the final manuscript is then sent to our printer in South Carolina who will produce and send to us a “blue line copy” of the text and a color proof of the front and back cover for proofing. Changes to the blue line proof or cover proofs are expensive ($8 per page, even if it’s only adding a comma or a period), so it is important for you (or your colleagues) to proof the final text very carefully before we send it back to the printer. You will receive the blue line proofs for one last chance to find minor errors and approve the blue line before the final production.
Camera-Ready Manuscript
In the case that you have already proofed and corrected your manuscript and cover and they need absolutely NO editing or formatting, reduce the prices below by 20%.The text and cover will be printed directly by the printer "as is."
Additional Services:
During this production process, Jeremiah Press Self-Publishing Plan secures copyright registration in the author’s name, assigns an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) number, and procures a Library of Congress Catalog Card Number for your book.
We assist you in designing front and back covers, providing the artwork, if necessary. We write the promotional text for the back cover and secure a scanning price code for the back cover.
Production, Turn-Around Time, & Shipping:T
The edited, approved manuscripts are then e-mailed to our exclusive printing company in North Carolina (where paper is much cheaper!) The professional staff there completes the printing and binding.
The standard paper weight is 50# offset for the text and 10 pt. C1S for the cover, which is usually printed in two colors (two colors of ink on glossy stock of any color.) The book will be bound by perfect binding (which is most often used for paperback books).
The books are then shipped directly to the author or to the author’s designate. The turn-around time for the entire process is normally 6 – 8 weeks, unless extensive rewriting or editing is necessary. (Shipping costs are not included in the estimates below.)
Overruns and Extra Copies:
Printers always end up printing more copies than are ordered (sometimes a hundred or so extra books), and ordinarily printers charge for the extra copies or “overruns.” Our printer does not charge for these and will send the overruns to you at no additional costs. The printer provides Jeremiah Press with ten copies of your book for post-printing procedures and for our files.
Post-printing Procedures:
Our final steps are to send two copies of your book to the Register of Copyrights, securing a current copyright in your name and sending two copies to the Library of Congress for cataloguing. At this same time, we also send two copies to the company that produces “Books in Print,” which is used by all bookstores in the United States. Your book will be listed by its ISBN number and by author so that anyone interested in purchasing it can order it through any bookstore.
Estimates of Cost:
Because the cost varies significantly due to the number of pages and the quantity of books ordered, the most accurate way to estimate cost is on a customized, individual basis. Below, you will find the estimates for various quantities (1000 - 10,000) of various sized books. (See "Cost and Possible Profits" Page of this website. The “Break-Even” figures refer to the number of books that must be sold at a suggested price to break even, and the “Possible Profits” figures result from the remainder of books to be sold at suggested prices. The author may choose any price he or she wishes to charge for the books; our estimates are just that -- estimates based on a number of factors, including common sense which allows a suggestion of what the market will bear.
Contract and Payment:
1/3 at time of accepting author’s disk/CD to Jeremiah Press;
1/3 at time of author’s approval of edited text;
1/3 at time of author’s approval of blue line and cover proofs.
We hope that this information will be helpful to you in your discernment process concerning the publication of your manuscript. If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to call me directly at our office (561-368-2322) or contact me at Jeremiahpr@aol.com.
*Note: All of the above describes our normal publishing process. However, we also offer a QUICK PUBLISHING PLAN, where the book will be delivered to you in as little as five days from the time you give us a camera-ready manuscript. The publishing prices are higher however.
A sample contract is attached. . For instance, because I often was invited to speak at diocesan or national events, I would just send cartons of my own books, published by Jeremiah Press self-publishing, ahead to be sold there. Diocesan directors, pastors, and DREs, for example, could include the cost of their book in tuition for religious education courses or in-service training courses.
